STATE COLLEGE, PA – The Centre Area Transportation Authority (CATA) will launch an updated version of its website, catabus.com, designed to improve accessibility and usability for all riders this evening, Thursday, May 7.
The refresh was completed to meet requirements under the Americans with Disabilities Act, align with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA, and comply with mandates set by the Federal Transit Administration. The updated site reflects CATA’s commitment to ensuring all riders—regardless of ability—can easily access transit information and services online.
The project began in 2025 with an internal review of the existing website and a study of peer transit agency websites, followed by a formal procurement process and collaboration with external accessibility and web development specialists. Work to implement the updated site began in early 2026, with the new version launching in May.
Improved Accessibility and Navigation
The refreshed website includes several upgrades aimed at making information easier to access and navigate, including:
-
-
- Improved compatibility with screen readers
- Updated color contrast to better support users with visual impairments
- Improved mobile responsiveness and readability
-
These changes are designed to benefit a wide range of users, including individuals with visual impairments, older adults, and mobile device users. “We are constantly exploring ways to remove barriers that someone might face when they want to ride CATA or learn about our services,” said CEO Todd Horsley. “Updating our website is another important step in that effort. It’s often the first interaction that people have with CATA, and these improvements help ensure we continue to serve every member of the community.”
The website update was completed as part of a multi-phase process that included accessibility review, design planning, and implementation. CATA staff worked alongside consultants to evaluate the existing site, identify areas for improvement, and develop a plan to meet accessibility standards ahead of the federal deadline.
CATA has implemented an internal system to regularly evaluate the website and continue to maximize its ease of use and accessibility.
“Accessibility isn’t a box anyone can check and be done with,” said CATA’s On-Demand and ADA Programs Manager Kimberly Clark. “It’s a continuous commitment that we’re working at every level of service and outreach to make sure all our riders can access the information and support they need.”
